Thank You, But Help Me, Too

You know that Anne Lamott says there are three types of prayers: “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” “Help me, help me, help me,” and “Wow, wow, wow.” Today is a full day of Thank yous.

But don’t forget to add the Help mes.

Help me, O God, recognize the hurt in the world and how I help create it.

Help me, O God, to reach out to people in need.

Help me, O God, to not be such an arrogant jerk.

Help me, O God, to be a person of love rather than fear.

Help me, O God, to know that I already have enough, and that someone next to me may not–and to give to them, rather than to myself.

Help me, O God, to do what’s right, even though it’s hard.

Amen. help_me_by_my_elixir

Thank you for the reminder of our need for help. I am reminded of Barbara Brown Taylor’s
newest book about “Learning to Walk in the Dark” or something similar. She says we pay too much attention to the “Thank you” moments and not enough to the darkness and the “Help me” cries we utter there.
